Tichy is one of the most famous Eissalones in Vienna. It is one of the oldest in the city and also it is famous for their Eismarillen Knödel. If you have spent more than three days in Vienna you could not have missed the big logo, which is being distributed either on the passing trams or in the underground.
The place exists since the 50s and is favorite place to many bot locals and visitors of the city. It is located in the 10th Bezirk on the station of Reumanplazt on the U1 line. It is situated in a very convenient place and you cannot miss it. I would say that it is an extremely traditional place nad if you want a taste of the flare of the last century that is the place for you.
I have been living in Vienna for two years now and I have never been there, but last Saturday me and another friend of mine decided to go and try those infamous Eismarillen Knödel. Since this summer in Vienna has been relatively hot, what better idea to get some ice cream to cool off. Of course for a weekend and for such a hot day there were a lot of people already waiting to get some ice cream. They have places both inside and outside, but it was unthinkable to get a table outside, since it was extremely crowded. We found a small table inside and thankfully it was a little bit cooler because of the fridges with ice cream inside.
We immediately ordered and the waitress asked us couple of times how many “Knödel” did we want. Both of us were really confident and answered “Three each”. Well, little did we know what we were getting into. She came carrying two plates with the biggest balls of ice cream I have seen. At first when I tried them they tasted different from what I have expected. They have a nougat-flavored crust and on the inside a very rich vanilla cream flavor. Even when they started melting, they kept their shape, since the ice was very much cream-based. On the inside you get an apricot-jam center, which on its own is of course divine, but beware – very sweet. The waitress offered us to bring us one Knödel each and I guess this would have been the wisest thing to do, but since we have never tried it we underestimated it. First of all I did not expect the portion to be so big, secondly they were too fat in terms of being very creamy and sweet and therefore we could not finish them.
However, it was a great experience and I am happy that I have tried this place out. I will be sure to go back and order some of their other sorts of sundays and ice creams. The service is good, we did not have to wait long for our order and the staff was very friendly. So if you ever want to try a new ice cream place this one offers great atmosphere, nice ice cream and decades of tradition.
