A typical day in my life would include waking up and turning on the coffee maker. A breakfast would be concluded by a piece of toast with something on top and off to uni or work we go. Yet, there are those special days when I have nowhere to rush to and then, my friends, I go for a brunch with my close ones.
Brunching deserves its own post, so someday I will write about that on the blog too. However, today we are heading for one specific place and manily Café Central. One of the “institutions” when it comes to coffee culture in Vienna and a favorite place to many authors and artists throught the past hundred years. Whenever you think of a traditional coffee house around the city, this would be it. So without further adew let’s get to it.
This is not the first time I’m visiting Café Central. Yet, when you live in the city, you try to avoid the touristy places, the long waiting lines and, of course, the crowds. Yet, the amazing atmospthere and the imperial ambiance that this place has, are definitely hard to say no to and you learn to make the sacrifice from time to time. So here we are on a Tuesday morning in front of the gates of Café Central. After what was actually just 10 minutes of waiting, we were seated at a table with a great view and not long after we were served our brekafast. We went for the smoked salmon, garnished with mustard-orange sauce and toasts, accompanied by a soft-boiled egg and a steamy cup of coffee. Needless to say the food was delicious and the portions were more than generous.
Another key factor here would be without doubt the service. I am not entirely sure if you are familiar with the cliché that Austrian waiters are rude, yet, you will be pleased to hear that this is definitely not the case here. Our waiter was this sweet, older guy who was very attentive, polite and made jokes every now and then. And quite honestly, as much as food and good atmosphere are important, nothing beats good service and attention to the customer.
So no matter whether you are a tourist or a born-and-bred Austrian, at least once in life you should give this place a go. If not for their awesome food then for the great atmosphere!
